A Biblical Response to Eric Douma - Part 1

Eric Douma is a pretribulational pastor in the Twin Cities. He has taught against prewrath for a couple of years now. I have read his articles and listened to his teachings and, until now, I have not had the time to respond to his teachings. In a recent sermon he gave on the Day of the Lord, it became my conviction that his exposition of the Scriptures is flawed. And it is my hope that he will reconsider his conclusions in light of the critique I am offering him.

Teaching the Prewrath Position

I am very optimistic given the response to the upcoming class for those of you who are planning on learning how better to teach the Prewrath position. For those who have taken the class in the past, you will want to take this class. The powerpoint presentation has changed in three very significant ways. Thus, you will want the new presentation.

If you have taken the training in the past, you are invited to take the class at no additional cost. However, you will need to register, which you will be able to do the week before the class actually begins. However, give me a heads up as soon as you know your plans so I will have a good record of how many alumni are in the class.

-Daniel 9 has been significantly updated and strengthens the basis of the Prewrath position.
-The critical question regarding the applicability of Matthew 24 has been strengthened and settled in my mind.
-2 Thessalonians 2:1-11 is the most difficult New Testament text for the Pretribulation position.

These three insights strengthen the biblical basis for the Prewrath position.

I Am Excited! More Teachers Wanted!

With the addition of the Prewrath position in Zondervan's new book: Three Views on The Rapture: Pretribulation, Prewrath, or Posttribulation, and the recent discussion by Dr. James MacDonald, pastor of the 12,000 member church, Harvest Bible Chapel and host of the radio ministry, Walk in the Word, heard on more than 1200 radio stations that he is prewrath in his eschatology, interest in the position has gone up noticeably.

Phone calls, emails, and personal notes from individuals and pastors confirm what we have known for a very long time that many are prewrath, but were uncomfortable publicizing it. As an optimist, I want to continue preparing for the day when large groups will want to know more.

A Prewrath Story of a "Berean" Couple

My wife and I met and were married at Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale, where she worked on staff for 4 years. I always "questioned" the legitimacy of Pre-Trib. Without even hearing of Pre-Wrath, without ever listening to any Pre-Wrath person speak on the subject, we decided to study the Scriptures together - and ask, why do we believe in Pre-Trib? Over a short period of time, we realized that it did not hold water. We came to the same conclusions about the 6th Seal, the "Thessalonians problem", etc. Only then, were we introduced to Marv Rosenthal's Ministry, and only then did God lead us to a smaller church, specifically to an adult Sunday School class at Pompano Beach First Baptist Church that believed in Pre-Wrath.

I was then laid off from my job at Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale after 12 years. We moved to Lexington, VA in 2009, where I am still employed in health care. God led us to Lexington Foursquare Gospel Church, and the pastor is Pre-Wrath! The pastor even offered to lend me Marv's Pre-Wrath Rapture book! Amazing! Our pastor taught Pre-Trib for 17 years before coming to the conclusion that it was flawed/incorrect. His change in viewpoint came when someone lent him a copy of Marv Rosenthal's Pre-Wrath Rapture book. He read it, studied it, studied the Scriptures, and the rest is history.

Anyway, I couldn't help but share this story. Although, we have many friends from our old church, CCFL, (some that also live in VA now), that think we've bumped out heads. They tell us we can believe what we want, but that they are still "going out in the first wave." It's funny, but other pastors say the same thing to our pastor! I pray that not one falls away. In my many years of "questioning" the legitimacy of Pre-Trib, I always thought "if" Pre-Trib was incorrect, (which of course I now believe it is), then it's perhaps one of the most - if not the most dangerous thing ever taught from a pulpit. If indeed Pre-Wrath is correct, (and I do believe it is), then Pre-Tribbers may have a hard time "finding their way out of complacency" when the time comes.

Prayer: Has It Come To That?

The Bible Says that Tsunamis will be a Sign to the Day of the Lord

We should pray for the people of Japan in the aftermath of the earthquake. A prayer for Japan. Earthquakes and tsunamis are events that should bring us to repentance (Luke 13:2-5), for each of us deserves to be swept into the ocean by a tsunami, and it is only by God's mercy that we are not. This event will either harden hearts more toward God, or by God's grace will break them with contriteness---there is no neutral response. When we view pictures and video of the devastation they remind us of how fragile creatures we really are. It should humble Humanity, especially how we so easily love to elevate our "greatness."

In the future, just before the Day of the Lord there will be a cluster of celestial and earthly disturbances that will act as a prelude warning to the Day of the Lord.

The sixth seal informs us that there will be this "huge earthquake" accompanied by a cluster of celestial signs:

"Then I looked when the Lamb opened the sixth seal, and a huge earthquake took place; the sun became as black as sackcloth made of hair, and the full moon became blood red;" - Rev 6:11-12

And I don't believe this will be some regional earthquake; instead, it will be global, since "every mountain" will be moved from its place.

Given the magnitude of this earthquake, it makes perfect sense why the Bible employs tsunami language in two passages on the sign of the Day of the Lord:

"And there will be signs in the sun and moon and stars, and on the earth nations will be in distress, anxious over the roaring of the sea and the surging waves" - Luke 21:25.

Nations do not "distress" over mere ten foot waves. This will be global tsunamis on a massive scale. Interestingly, the Greek term for "surging waves" (salos) can mean "earthquake." Also, the text indicates that the nations on the earth are not so much distressed and anxious over the celestial signs as they are with the roaring of the sea and surging waves.

The other text is Rev 6:14b:

"and [every] island was moved from its place."

Again, mere ten foot waves do not accomplish this. No wonder Scripture prophecies that "people will be fainting from fear and from the expectation of what is coming on the world."

This is a sober truth. Do not fall into the Amos syndrome, in which his audience was deceptively self-assured that they were right with God and that the Day of the Lord was for those "other people."

"Woe to those who wish for the day of the LORD! Why do you want the LORD's day of judgment to come? - Amos 5:18

Today is the day for self-examination.

Luke 21:36 - "Escape" Refers to the Day of the Lord, not the Great Tribulation

But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man. - Luke 21:36 ESV

This verse is often cited by pretribulationists as evidence that the rapture occurs before the Great Tribulation. But an examination of the context will show that the "escaping" refers to the Day of the Lord's wrath, not the Great Tribulation.

This verse is found in the Olivet Discourse in Luke's account. Even though Matthew's account and Luke's account of the Olivet Discourse intend different purposes and emphases, they both contain a parallel section that refers to Christ's second coming (Luke 21:25-28; Matthew 24:27-31).

Pretribulationists assume that in Luke 21:36, "all these things," must refer to the Great Tribulation event back in verses 20-24. However, the immediate context shows that "all these things" refers to God's judgment when the Son of Man comes back, not the tribulation before the Son of Man's Return.

First, the immediate context to "all these things" is: "And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken" (Luke 21:25-26)

The cosmic disturbances are harbingers of God's wrath, which is why it says, "people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world." What is foreboding that is impending for the world? That which we want to escape: God's wrath!

Second, notice what it says next: "And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory." Why is this reference to the Son of Man significant? Because it is at that time after "praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man." (Luke 21:36)

The escaping is related to the standing before the Son Man. When Christ comes back, either you will stand before the Son of Man counted worthy through this redeeming grace, or you will flee away from the Son of Man counted worthy to experience his wrath. This is why we are told to "stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place."

Third, observe which day that Jesus refers to in the previous verse 34:

"But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap." (Luke 21:34)

There is only one day in this context which "that day" can refer to, and that is the day that the Son of Man comes in with power and great glory (v. 27).

Fourth, verse 20-24 refers to an oppressed minority who live among the nations: "They will fall by the edge of the sword and be led captive among all nations." In contrast, verse 36 is speaking of the context of divine retributive judgment upon the nations found in verse 35: "For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth." (Luke 21:35)

Fifth, what is the nature of this "escape"? Is he referring far back to verse 21 about fleeing to the mountains? Not at all. It is much larger in scope. The immediate context gives us the nature of escaping:

"Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads [confidence in Christ], because your redemption is drawing near." (Luke 21:28)

"But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man [confidence in Christ]." (Luke 21:36)

Sixth, the parallel teaching of Luke's "spiritual watchfulness" is found in Matthew 24:42--25-13. And in Matthew's account we are certain that this spiritual watchfulness points to Christ's glorious Coming (vv. 29-31), and not the Great Tribulation.

In conclusion, with these contextual considerations, we can be confident that the antecedent to "all these things" which we are called to escape is found in verse 26: "with foreboding of what is coming on the world [i.e., God's wrath]."

Now the question is, are you spiritually staying awake and praying to escape these things? Are you testing your election in Christ and thereby not being self-deceived, lest you be exposed on that day to be a fake Christian? It will be too late then.

"But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap." -Luke 21:34

"So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ" -1 Thess 5:6-9
